Orai is situated in the district of Jalaun in Uttar Pradesh. It is administered by a municipality and is also the district headquarters of Jalaun which falls under Jhansi division. It is situated near NH 25 between Kanpur and Jhansi and SH 21 runs through it and is located in Bundelkhand region.

About Orai

A Brief History of Orai

Orai is named after the great saint Uddalak who worshipped there. It is to be noted that earlier it was called as Uddalak Nagari. It also enjoys historical importance as it is located between Kalpi, Jhansi and Mahoba. This city is also renowned after ‘King Mahil’ who was ill-tempered and betrayed his nephews Udal and Aalah. Aalah who belongs to Banaphar Rajput clan was the general of King Parmal of Chandel and is also quite famous. He fought against Prithviraj Chauhan in the year 1182 CE. Aalah Khand poem is written after Aalah and is popularly recited in Bundelkhand region and it is otherwise known as “Parmal Raso”.

In the year 1196, Muhammad of Ghor conquered Kalpi which is situated on the banks of River Yamuna and in 14th century Bundelas occupied Jalaun to a great extent. Then it was passed on to Delhi Sultanate and then to Marathas. In the year 1806, Kalpi was handed over to Britishers. Finally in 1856, it settled with an area of 1477 sq miles. Orai also took place in the 1857 revolt and they slaughtered Europeans until 1858 September when the rebels were defeated finally. During the later part of 19th century, it suffered from Saccharum spontaneum (Kans Grass) and it led to the abandoning of the village. Kalpi and Konch are the two largest towns of Orai and a small part of the district was watered by Bethwa Canal. Ghee, cotton, oil-seeds and grains were exported from Orai. Post 1990, industrialization took place in Orai which brought major changes and setting up of colleges, schools, roads, etc.

Orai is situated at 25.98o N 79.47o E with total area of 1477 Sq miles. The elevation of Orai is 131 m (430 ft).

Climate of Orai

Orai enjoys a composite climate i.e. a high temperature during summer and low temperature during winter. Generally, Orai’s climate is characterized as hot summer with general dryness and rainfall during the season of southwest monsoon. March to June is the summer season with May being the hottest month. The rainy season of Orai starts from mid-June and lasts till September end. From October to mid-November is the retreating monsoon season. Orai’s annual rainfall is 793.8 mm and 90% of the same is received during the monsoon season. Humidity is the lowest during April.

Business and Economy in Orai

Orai became an industrial area post 1990 with the setting up of Sun India Pharmacy, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, etc. This also led to the paving of roads and setting up of schools and colleges in the city. Grains, ghee, oil-seeds and cotton are exported from Orai. Orai is the major industrial hub of the region next only to Kanpur.

Mahil Talab

Mahil Talab in OraiIt was constructed in memory of King Mahil who ruled Orai. The King was very fond of getting married and he did 401 marriages. Later he abandoned this childish attitude and post his shistacharya he constructed an ashram for his wives who can live there according to their wishes.

Because of this, this place becomes interesting tourists spot for the travelers.

Beri Bala Baba

This place is named after Hazrat Ghaji Mansoor Ali Shah also famous as Beri Bale Wale who is known as the King of Orai. General belief here is that the Baba is great and he grants the wishes of all those who wish by heart regardless of the community. This Dargaah is visited by pilgrims belonging to different community on every Thursday. Baba’s URS is celebrated on 1st and 2nd June every year in great fervor.

Thadeshwari Temple

It is the ancient temple of the Orai city and it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman. In this temple, the devotees can find a huge Shivalinga and they can also recite the holy Ramayana which is kept in the temple peacefully.

Moni Mandir

This holy temple is visited by pilgrims from different parts of the country. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. During Shravan month, thousands of pilgrims throng this temple.

Radhakrishna Mandir

It is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Shri Krishna. Janmashtami is the major festival celebrated here during which idols of Radha and Lord Shri Krishna are beautifully adorned.


Yet another popular tourist destination in Orai is Ramkund. This place is dedicated to Maikasur Devta who is the God of animals. According to the local legend, Maikasur Devta popularly known as Dharamdhaari resides in Ramkund. It is believed that his blessings cure the pets. So this temple is visited by people with their pets. August is considered to be the sacred month and several people with their pets worship here to take the blessings of the Maikasur Devta.
